The guy at a hostel in Medellin showed me how he ate for $4 a day and it actually worked
Two years ago I stayed at a hostel in Medellin and met this guy from Ireland who had been traveling for 8 months on almost nothing. He took me to the fruit market down the street where a huge bag of mangoes, bananas, and avocados cost me about 8,000 pesos, which was like $2. He said he always books places with a kitchen and eats breakfast and lunch from the market, then only goes out for dinner once or twice a week. I tried it for the rest of my trip and my food spending dropped from around $25 a day to under $6. Has anyone else had a hostel roommate or random traveler drop a money saving tip on them that you still use?
