Took me 4 hours to book one bus ticket in Peru, what am I doing wrong?

Last month in Cusco I tried to book a night bus to Arequipa online and every site kept rejecting my foreign card. After 2 hours of that I walked to the terminal and the window clerk only spoke Quechua, we used my phone translator for another hour. Finally a guy in line told me to use Yape, the local app, but it needs a Peruvian phone number which I didn't have. I ended up paying a hostel worker extra to do it for me, total time was 4 hours for a $25 ticket. Is there a faster way to handle local transport payments when you're only in town for a few days? Has anyone else hit this wall with mobile payment apps in South America?
