Blew $80 on a budgeting app that just made things worse

I signed up for YNAB last month thinking it would finally get my spending under control. After 3 weeks of entering every coffee and gas purchase, I felt more stressed than before. The whole envelope method just didn't click for me, and I kept forgetting to categorize stuff. Then I realized I was spending more time managing the app than actually saving money. I canceled the subscription and went back to a simple spreadsheet, which has worked way better. Has anyone else had a budgeting tool backfire on them like that?

Yeah, this reminds me of how everything nowadays comes with a fancy tool that ends up being more work than the actual problem. Like those meal delivery kits, they sound great until you're spending 45 minutes chopping garlic for a Tuesday dinner. Sometimes the simple stuff just works better because it doesn't add a whole new layer of stress. I've noticed people love to overcomplicate things with apps and tech when really we just need a habit we can stick with. Your spreadsheet probably feels natural because you're not fighting against some rigid system that expects you to change your whole lifestyle overnight.

Totally agree @tessa_kelly, why do people act like adding more steps equals solving the problem? Simpler always wins in the long run.

And does that overcomplicating thing actually make people feel like they're being productive even when they're not? I've seen so many friends download five different habit trackers and then quit everything after a week because it was too much to keep up with. Your point about the meal kits is spot on too, half the time the packaging alone takes longer to deal with than just cooking from scratch. Do you think there's a certain personality type that falls for the complicated stuff harder than others?
