My grocery budget was shot until I checked unit prices
Last month I grabbed my usual box of cereal without looking and paid $5.99. Then I saw the store brand right next to it for $3.29 and the box was bigger. I spent a Saturday afternoon checking unit prices on everything I buy and found I was overpaying by like $40 a month on stuff like laundry detergent and peanut butter. Has anyone else found big savings just by switching to the store brand?

I was honestly one of those people who thought store brands were just lower quality. I'd grab name brand detergent without even looking at price per ounce. Then my wife showed me the unit price on a store brand cereal and it was literally half the cost for the same exact ingredients list. Now I check unit prices on everything, especially things like olive oil and trash bags where the store brand has been just as good for me.

My dad was the same way with canned tomatoes. He swore by the expensive Italian import brand until I did a blind taste test with him and the store brand version. It was funny watching him try to defend the name brand when he couldn't even pick it out in the lineup. Now he's the one checking unit prices at the store and telling me about his "savings.
