Update: I tracked every dollar for a week in January and the small stuff was not the problem
Everyone says cut the lattes, but when I went through my spending during the week of January 8th in Columbus, the tiny stuff added up to about $31 total. What actually broke me was a $210 car repair on a Wednesday plus a $95 birthday dinner I forgot about. I still say the popular advice is backwards, because skipping coffee would have saved me a tenth of what one bad day cost. Has anyone else found that one surprise bill does way more damage than daily habits?
skipping coffee would have saved me a tenth of what one bad day cost" hits hard. I used to be all about the latte thing too, tracking my little buys and feeling guilty over a $6 sandwich. Then my cat got sick in Feb and boom, $380 at the vet in one afternoon. That was like 3 months of my "bad habits" gone in an hour. Now I keep a small emergency fund for stuff like that instead of stressing over every coffee. The daily stuff matters but it's not what wrecks you.
