My coworker saw my journal on the break table and asked if I was 'doing homework'
I left my bullet journal open on the break table at the shop in Boise last Tuesday while I microwaved my lunch, and a guy I barely know named Dale picked it up and flipped through it. He asked if I was doing homework for a class, and when I said it was just my planner he said 'so you draw your own calendar, that's a lot of work for a to do list.' I tried to show him my weekly spread and the habit tracker on the next page, but he just nodded and handed it back like I'd shown him a timesheet. What do you all say when someone calls your journal 'just a planner'? Do you bother explaining the system or just let it go?
I had this exact thing happen at my old job when a guy in receiving glanced at my open bujo and said "neat doodles." I stopped trying to explain after a while because most people who have never kept one just see paper and pen and think it's busywork. What I do now is keep it closed when I'm not using it, and if someone asks I just say "it's how I keep my head straight" and leave it at that. If they seem actually curious, like they ask a follow up question, then I'll show them one page and keep it short. Pushing the habit tracker on someone who doesn't care just makes them tune out more. Save the full tour for people who ask real questions, and let Dale think whatever he wants while you eat your lunch in peace.
