A journo friend in Cairo told me last year the stories that vanish never get a correction, and she was dead right
I started tracking down the original versions of pieces I saw pulled from 3 different outlets in 2024, and 2 of them quietly changed key paragraphs with no editor's note at all. What's your method for catching a rewrite before the archive sites scrape it?
Wrote a little script that pings the URL every few hours and diffs the text against my last copy, which sounds way cooler than it is since I stole most of it from a Stack Overflow answer about tracking prices. Two of my three catches last year came from that, and the third was just dumb luck because I had the page open in a tab I forgot to close. Wayback and archive.today both scrape on their own schedule, so if an edit lands between crawls it's gone and nobody ever says a word. My real trick is saving a plain text dump the second I read anything worth remembering, because once it's changed the old version basically stops existing.
