Chatted with a guy who started installing in the 80s last week
He told me they used to run cable without any tester at all, just hooked it up and hoped for the best... made me wonder if we overthink this stuff now, you know?

Honestly, I've been there. Early on I used to just punch down and cross my fingers, and half the time it worked fine. But then I spent a whole afternoon tracing a fault in a run that a simple tester would've caught in five seconds. Tbh, a basic continuity checker saved me way more time than it cost. Ngl, you can get away with no tester in some old builds, but for anything modern with data or PoE, it's just not worth the gamble.

Oh man, I had a buddy who swore he could do it all by ear. Took him four hours to chase down a crossover issue that a $40 tester would have flagged in ten seconds flat. He bought one the next day and hasn't looked back.
