Old fiber termination trick still works better than I thought

Been doing this 15 years and always used the standard cleaver and fusion splicer. Tried my old mechanical splice and crimp method on a tight attic job last week. Worked like a charm in 30 degree weather where my fusion splicer kept throwing errors. Anyone else keep the old school kit for backup?

Man, that's a good point about cold weather messing with the fusion gear. Did you have to mess with the cleave angle at all for the mechanical method, or did it just work with the usual prep?

@daniel552 I remember one time I was trying to tune a cleave in the garage and my dog started barking at a squirrel RIGHT as I was eyeballing the angle. Ended up setting it a few degrees off and it still cut fine, just left a weird edge on the left side of the blade. So yeah, the mechanical method is pretty forgiving even when you mess it up a little, at least in my experience.
