I disagree that a squeaky zoom ring means send the lens in, fixed my 24-70 with a $4 part
Everyone in my local group in Denver keeps saying a grinding zoom ring means the lens is done and you should ship it off for a $300 repair. My Canon 24-70 got that gritty feel 3 months ago and I opened it myself instead. The issue was a hardened ribbon of old grease on the inner barrel plus one worn roller, and a $4 replacement roller and some fresh grease got it smooth again. If your lens is making noise, check the rollers before you box it up. What is the worst "just send it in" advice you have heard?
Had a similar thing with my old Tacoma, the rear diff started howling and every forum said drop the whole axle and rebuild it for a grand. Turned out the breather tube was clogged and it just needed fresh fluid, twenty bucks and an afternoon. The grease in these lenses dries out the same way, gets hard and gritty and people think the gears are shot when it is just old lube grinding around. That roller you swapped was probably fine too, just gummed up with the same hardened junk. Half the "send it in" crowd has never opened anything up in their life, they just repeat what the last guy told them.
