Just realized my $12 foam pad from Walmart beats my buddy's $200 sleeping pad for cold ground
I camped at Douthat State Park in Virginia last month when it hit 28 degrees at night. My buddy brought his fancy inflatable pad that cost him around $200, and I brought my cheap closed cell foam pad that I got at Walmart for $12. He was shivering and miserable by 2am, tossing around, and I slept straight through until sunrise. Here is the trick I figured out, I doubled up. I put the foam pad under my inflatable pad, not instead of it. The foam blocks the cold from coming up from the ground and the inflatable gives you the cushion. My setup cost maybe $60 total and his cost $200 and he was the one freezing. I tried this after reading some old backpacking forum post from a guy in Montana who swore by it. R value stacking is real and nobody at REI will tell you this because they want to sell you one expensive pad. Has anyone else tried layering pads like this or am I late to the party?
