Shoutout to the freeCodeCamp JavaScript course for teaching me about strict equality

I was building a simple number guessing game and used == to check the guess. It kept saying 'correct' when the guess was '5' (as a string) and the answer was 5 (as a number). Switching to === fixed it instantly. Has anyone else tripped up on type coercion like this when starting out?

My manager said my project updates were too long and it changed how I write emails

She told me 'Jenny, I need the bottom line in the first line, not after three paragraphs' after a big report I sent last Tuesday. Now I start every email with the main point or question, then add details only if needed. Has anyone else had to totally change how they communicate at work?

PSA: My $80 airlock mistake on a big batch of kimchi

I tried to save a few bucks last month and bought a set of cheap plastic airlocks from a random online seller. They looked fine at first, but after about a week on my 5-gallon kimchi crock, one of them cracked right at the base. The whole batch got exposed to way too much air and developed a weird, slimy film. I had to throw out the entire thing, which was about 15 pounds of veggies and spice paste. That's easily $40 in ingredients down the drain plus the $40 for the faulty locks. Has anyone found a truly reliable brand for larger ferments that won't fail like this?

TIL my old archaeology professor used to map sites with just a compass and notebook, but now they use drones and 3D scanners for everything.

He told me over coffee that while the new tech in places like Peru finds things faster, he sometimes misses the slow puzzle of piecing a site together by hand, so what's a discovery you think tech has changed the most?

Warning: that 'unlimited' art storage site I used just deleted my whole 2023 folder

I paid for a year of CloudCanvas Pro at $120 because they said files were safe forever. Went to grab an old piece last week and my entire 'Project_Archives' folder from last year was just gone, no backup warning. Has anyone else lost work with them and found a better place to keep finished art safe?

Serious question, was spending $15k on a dedicated home automation wiring package a smart move or a total waste?

My builder pushed hard for it, saying it was future-proofing, but I'm not sure the extra cost over a good wireless system was worth it, so what's your take on hardwired vs. wireless for a new custom build?

Ran into a guy at the gas station in Talkeetna who said something I can't forget

Stopped for gas on the way back from a job in Willow last fall. It was getting dark early, maybe 5 pm. This older guy at the next pump was just staring at the mountains. I made some small talk about the weather. He didn't even look at me, just kept watching the peaks and said, 'You know, most people come up here to find themselves. I came up here to lose the person I was down there.' Then he got in his truck and drove off. Didn't say another word. It was one of those moments that just hangs in the air. I think about it a lot when I'm driving the long stretches for work. Has anyone else had a random, deep chat with a stranger up here that just stuck with you?

A client in Montana told me my shoe fit was 'lazy' and it stung, but he was right.

He said I was just fitting the shoe to the foot, not the foot to the shoe, and it was causing his horse to forge. I was leaving too much heel, about a quarter inch, to avoid touching the sensitive parts. I started trimming the heels back more and fitting the shoe tighter, even if it took me an extra ten minutes per foot. After two months, the forging stopped completely. Anyone else get called out on a bad habit that actually improved your work?
