The weekend my tent gave up on me in the Smokies

Last October I drove 5 hours to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, all excited for a 3 day solo trip. Second night the rain started and my old tent just started leaking through the seams, I woke up at 2am in a puddle with my sleeping bag soaked. I ended up rigging a tarp with some paracord I had in my emergency kit, watched the sunrise shivering but honestly kind of grateful for the backup plan. It made me realize I should test gear in my backyard before trusting it out there. Has anyone else had a piece of equipment fail at the worst possible moment, and did it change how you pack now?

Ha! My camp stove died mid-bacon on my last trip, now I pack a backup spatula just for emotional support.
