Found out my old school had a speech policy buried in the student handbook from 1998
I was digging through a box of my stuff from college and found the student handbook from my freshman year at Ball State. Page 47 had a line saying students could face discipline for "disrespectful" speech about staff, which is way vaguer than anything I remember hearing about. I looked it up and it turns out that line stayed in the handbook until 2011, so thousands of students agreed to it without knowing. Did your school ever have weird rules like that hiding in the fine print?
Page 47 of a 1998 handbook that sat around until 2011 sounds less like a secret plot and more like typical admin laziness. Schools copy paste that stuff forward year after year and nobody bothers to update it. "Disrespectful" speech policies were super common back then anyway, this was pre social media so most schools had some vague line about respecting staff. Thousands of students "agreed to it" but realistically nobody read page 47 of a handbook they got at orientation. The real question is whether anyone was ever actually punished under that rule. If nobody got in trouble, then it's just old paperwork nobody cleaned up.
