Guest speaker in Ohio versus debate club invite, night and day difference

Tbh I sat through a 45 minute speech last month where the speaker just read off slides and no one could ask questions. Then I went to a student-run debate event with a Q&A format and people actually pushed back on ideas. What makes a campus event feel more like real free speech to you, the format or the speaker's openness to pushback?
