I thought speech codes at my nephew's college were no big deal until I sat in on his 8am seminar
My nephew goes to a small school in Ohio and I always figured the free speech stuff was blown out of proportion, just kids being dramatic about nothing. Then I sat in on his political science seminar when I was visiting in October, and watched 19 students stay totally silent when the prof asked who voted, because one girl who spoke up got called out by name on a class group chat later that night. So my question is, does the chill come from the students themselves or from the way the rules get worded, and how do you even tell the difference from the outside?
