Question about that campus speaker who got protested before anyone heard them

Last semester at my school in Ohio, this conservative commentator was coming to speak and people were already calling for the event to be cancelled based on things they heard secondhand. I was skeptical too because some of the stuff I read online sounded pretty rough. But I decided to actually watch a full interview with her before making up my mind, and it turned out her opinions were way more nuanced than what the flyers and posts claimed. Has anyone else had that experience where a speaker or event turned out to be completely different from the outrage around it?

That's really frustrating when people start judging before giving someone a real chance to speak. Good on you for going straight to the source instead of just taking the outrage at face value. It's happened to me a few times too, and it's wild how different the actual conversation is compared to what you'd expect from all the noise.

honestly I used to be way quicker to jump on the outrage bandwagon myself lol. like I'd see a headline or a snippet and just assume I knew the whole story. but @walker.jana had a post a while back that really made me sit back and think about it differently. now I try to at least read the full thing or hear the person out before I get all worked up. it's crazy how different the actual conversation is when you stop assuming the worst. I swear half the drama online would disappear if people just took a minute to ask questions first.
