Tried a silent protest at the student union and got yelled at by security
I just stood there with a sign that said 'let us speak' during lunch rush. Security came over and said I needed a permit for any demonstration over 5 people. There was nobody else with me.

Wait, did they actually give you a hard time for standing alone? That seems like total overkill on their part. I had something similar happen at my campus library last year, I just stood quietly holding a sign about book censorship and a security guard tried to tell me I was disturbing the peace. lol. What actually worked for me was pulling up the student handbook on my phone and politely showing them the exact rule about "peaceful assemblies of any size" didn't require a permit. The guard looked confused but just told me to move along anyway. Honestly sometimes they just don't know the rules themselves, so having the actual policy ready to go can shut them up fast.
