Tbh, I thought booking a speaker with opposing views to our campus would be a simple email and signature. Last semester, I spent 6 weeks trying to get a former federal prosecutor who wrote about immigration policy to come talk. The administration required three separate forums, a security plan estimate of $1,200, and a liability form that felt like a book. We finally canceled because the paperwork deadline passed, and I learned that free speech on campus is less about shouting and more about navigating approval chains. Has anyone else hit a wall with event clearance rules that made you wonder if the point was to silence the talk entirely?
