Pro tip: Got shut down for mentioning book bans at my book club in Portland
Last Thursday at Powell's Books local meetup, I brought up how the library in my neighborhood removed 12 titles from the kids section last month. The group leader cut me off saying we stick to fiction discussions only (I guess real life hits too close). Three people nodded at me though, so maybe next time we can do a banned books night. Has anyone else had their book club avoid topics like this?

Sounds like they're scared a real book might bite them.

Oh man, that's frustrating. I just finished reading about the American Library Association's report on banned books and it said challenges to kids books went up 65% last year, mostly targeting stuff about race or LGBTQ+ characters. Maybe it's just me but I feel like book clubs are supposed to be safe spaces to talk about exactly this kind of thing, not avoid it. Idk, I'd probably try to find a different group or see if those three people want to start their own banned books night on the side.
