A manager told me my updates were too long so I cut them to 3 bullet points and got promoted 5 months later
I used to send these long status emails every Friday, like 600 words with full paragraphs about every little thing I touched that week. My manager pulled me aside in March and said flat out, "I stop reading after the second paragraph." That stung but she was right. So I switched to 3 bullets max: what got done, what's stuck, what I need from you. Took me about 2 weeks to stop feeling like I was leaving stuff out. By August I was running the weekly team sync because my boss said my updates were the clearest on the team, and I got bumped to senior in September. Anyone else get blunt feedback like that and have it backfire at first before it helped?
Got the same kind of talk years back and yeah it stung for a while. What helped me was keeping a running list all week so I never had to dig for what to write on Friday, just picked the top 3. My first few short updates felt naked but nobody ever asked me for the missing stuff.
