inVent: my kid's school banned the word "gun" in every essay, even the one about a water gun fight
Man, come on, a word ban is a word ban and someone has to draw the line somewhere. Think about how fast a story about a water fight turns into a story about a real fight when the teacher isn't looking, and the district can't exactly read every draft by hand with 30 kids per class, so the scan does the first pass for them. Yeah the musket paper got through fine, but that was two years ago and rules change after stuff happens, maybe a threat somewhere in the district nobody told you about. A little kid losing the word gun in an essay is a small price if it stops one real one from slipping by.

inThe night sky over Great Basin made me delete 3 years of backyard shots
Have you ever heard of the Bortle scale? I read a piece a while back about how most people in cities never see better than a class 8 or 9 sky and think that is just what night looks like. The writer said the Milky Way is basically gone for two thirds of the country now. I grew up outside Reno so I had it decent, but the first time I went to a true dark site it was like someone turned the universe's brightness knob up. Your point about doing light pollution cleanup instead of actual photography is dead on. I read that most beginner guides skip over this and just tell you to buy more filters, which feels like treating the symptom instead of the problem.

inMy 12 year old nephew gave me a one word prompt that broke my writer's block
Man, that dry spell feeling is the worst, been there way too many times. Dan's trick is wild but honestly whatever gets the words out is a win.
