A recruiter at a job fair in Dayton told me to take my master's degree off my resume, and I still think about it
She said it made me look like I'd want more money than the $16 an hour front desk job paid, which was fair I guess. I left it on anyway out of pride, didn't get the job, and now I wonder if she was right. Has anyone else gotten weird advice like that from a recruiter?
The part people skip is what happens AFTER you dumb down your resume. You get the $16 front desk job, sure. Then six months in, they hand you the schedule for the whole office because you're clearly the sharpest one there. Now you're doing manager work for front desk pay and you can never bring up the degree, because you lied about who you are. I've watched two friends do this exact thing. Both ended up job hunting again within a year, and now they have a gap to explain on top of it. Taking the master's off doesn't get you the job, it just gets you stuck in a smaller box.
