My old boss in Phoenix kept pushing me to take a management track, but I stuck with the technical side.

He said I'd cap my salary at 90k, but five years later I'm a lead engineer clearing 140k. Anyone else find the 'move up or move out' advice just doesn't fit some people?

Honestly though, that's a pretty rare outcome. Most tech guys who stay individual contributors do hit a hard ceiling, way lower than management. Your boss was probably just giving the standard advice that works for 90% of people.

My last company had principal engineers making over 200k.
