PSA: I turned down a manager spot due to the drive time and it was smart
I knew adding three hours of traffic daily would wipe me out, so I waited for a closer opening that let me keep my energy up.

Damn right, people forget how commute stress follows you home. You get back too fried to cook a real meal, you snap at your partner over nothing, you bail on your kid's bedtime story. That extra title pay just goes toward takeout and therapy, lol. You protected your actual life, not just your job.

Wasn't it easy to just see that bigger paycheck and ignore the rest? I totally get that. I used to judge people who took lower paying jobs closer to home, thought they weren't ambitious. But man, hearing stories like your friend Mark's? That really shifted my view. You don't realize how much that daily grind steals from you until you see the real cost, and it's never just about the money. Protecting your actual time and energy is the real win.

God yeah, my friend Mark took a "better" job last year with a 90 minute drive each way. After two months his wife said he'd just stare at the garage door for five minutes after getting home. They were living on microwave pasta and he missed half his daughter's soccer games. He quit and took a pay cut to work close by, says it saved his marriage.
