Talked to a friend who got laid off from his tech job in Austin last month. He said 'They kept telling me I was safe right up until the meeting invite.' Made me rethink how much I trust company promises.

I always took those promises at face value. Hearing stories like this makes it clear they're just words to keep things calm. You really can't trust anything until you see the paperwork.

My old boss in Dallas did the same thing. Companies will say anything to keep you working until they're ready to cut. Never believe you're safe.

What did you do when you heard that? For me, I started quietly updating my resume and reaching out to old coworkers. I mean, it gave me a head start when the layoff news finally came.
