Vent: my manager said my reports were 'too detailed' and it stung at first
I used to pride myself on making super thorough weekly reports for my team in Chicago. Lots of charts, footnotes, even a summary of every minor win. Last month my manager pulled me aside and said 'you're burying the key takeaways under a mountain of noise.' I was pretty mad for a day or two. But then I looked back at old reports and realized the big picture stuff was getting lost. So now I put the main decision points and numbers in the first paragraph and shove the rest into an appendix. The VPs actually read them now, which is weird but good. Has anyone else had to completely change the way they present info based on one piece of feedback?

Ha, jokes on me because I spent six months making these elaborate reports thinking I was a star, only to find out nobody read past the first bullet point. Maybe I should start putting the main point in the subject line next time.
