Noticing more clients ask us to skip steps for a cheaper bill

Lately I see jobs where people want things done fast and cheap, not right. Like last week, a lady wanted me to build shelves without anchoring them to studs. She said it was fine since they'd hold light stuff, but I know that's asking for trouble. I offered to do it proper, but she hired someone else who said yes. It bugs me because that shelf could fail and hurt someone. Other carpenters must face this choice between losing cash and doing safe work. What's your take on handling these situations?

Yeah, I was just listening to a podcast where a contractor talked about this. They called it "value engineering" but it was really just clients pushing for cheap fixes that would fail in a year. That shelf story is scary, man. Cutting corners on safety stuff always comes back to bite someone, usually the homeowner.

How often do you see "value engineering" used as an excuse for unsafe work? It just feels like a sneaky way to pass the blame when things fail down the road.
