Update: heard a guy at the lumber yard brag about skipping joist hangers, took me 3 days to stop thinking about it
I was standing in line at the yard in Bakersfield last week and this older guy was telling his buddy he never bothers with hangers on deck framing because "nails have held fine for 20 years." I did the math on a 12 foot span with a wet winter load and it is not even close to fine, which is why it bugged me so much. How do you bring this up with a customer or a helper without sounding like you are just being picky?
Saw a similar thing at a yard in Modesto years back, guy was loading pressure treated without gloves and telling everyone the chemicals don't soak in anymore. Watched him wipe his face with those same hands and just walked away.
Far as bringing it up, I just ask them what the inspector says about it. Takes the heat off me and puts it on the code book.
