My uncle swore the moon landing was fake. He bet me $100 it was staged.

He was a Vietnam vet. Had all these 'proofs'. I was 16. Took his money. Showed him the retroreflectors left on the moon. You can bounce lasers off them from any observatory. He still didn't believe me. Has anyone else had a relative double down on a conspiracy even after hard evidence?

Just passed 50 nights in my hammock setup this year

I've been keeping a little log of my camping trips, and this weekend I hit 50 nights sleeping in my hammock this year. That caught me off guard, I figured I was maybe at 35. It matters to me because I switched from a tent two years ago and was worried I'd regret it. I'm in the Pacific Northwest so rain has been a real test for my tarp skills. So far so good, but has anyone else found a good way to keep your underquilt dry when packing up in a downpour?

That old notary near Jasper Ave closed down, made me think

I walked by that little notary office on 104 Street last week and saw it was shuttered for good. The guy who ran it, Mr. Kowalski, used to charge $20 per document and knew everyone by name. Now I'm stuck going to those chain places near Southgate that charge $50 and rush you through. Anyone else miss the old school legal places that actually felt like part of the neighborhood?

Unpopular opinion: That time a moderator told me to 'tone down my language' actually made my writing BETTER

I used to think any kind of editing feedback was censorship. But last year a forum mod sent me a private message saying my posts were getting reported for being too aggressive with caps and exclamation points. I got really mad at first. But then I looked back at some of my old rants and yeah, I was just YELLING about everything. They said 'try making your point without shouting and see if people listen more'. So I tried it for a week. And honestly, more people started agreeing with me. My comments got more upvotes. So now I still use caps sometimes for EMPHASIS but only on important words. Has anyone else gotten feedback that actually helped you communicate better instead of just shutting you up?

Watched a python course 3 times before it finally clicked

I spent about 6 weeks going through this free YouTube course for beginners, and the first two times I couldn't even follow a simple loop. On the third pass something just snapped, and I wrote my first script that actually worked - a little program to rename files in a folder. Now I'm wondering if I should jump into JavaScript next or stick with Python for a few more months. Anyone else have a topic they had to revisit like 3 times before it made sense?

Just realized how different banned memes looked in 2016 vs 2024

I was digging through an old hard drive from 8 years ago and found meme folders from when I was active on r/The_Donald. Back then the banned stuff was mostly Pepe the Frog edits and outright racist cartoons. Fast forward to last week, I saw a mod on a UK politics forum ban a meme that was just a screenshot of a Guardian headline with a sarcastic caption. The whole bar for what counts as hateful changed. Which side do you think shifted more, the platforms or the people making the memes?

Tried two different resume formats side by side and one got me 5 interviews in 2 weeks

I spent months using a fancy two column resume with graphics and icons. Got nothing but silence. Switched to a plain text based format with clear sections and bullet points. The difference was night and day. Has anyone else found that simpler resume layouts actually work better for getting past automated systems?

Bought a $400 Alaska fishing license package and only caught 3 fish

I went all in on a non-resident fishing package near Homer last June. Paid $400 for a combo license and a guided halibut trip that was supposed to be a sure thing. Turns out the weather turned nasty and we spent half the day anchored in a bay barely getting bites. Has anyone else shelled out big for an Alaska fishing trip that didn't deliver?

My article about a landslide in Myanmar got ghosted by three major US outlets

I spent two weeks putting together a piece on a massive landslide in a jade mining region of northern Myanmar that killed around 150 people back in July. The local press covered it for a day or two, then it just vanished. I sent my story to three big U.S. news sites, all of which said they 'appreciated the reporting' but never ran it. One editor told me plain as day that 'readers aren't interested in mining accidents abroad.' That rubbed me the wrong way, considering the military junta there actively blocks satellite images of the area. I ended up posting the whole thing on a small independent platform, where it got maybe 200 views. Has anyone else run into this wall where outlets just won't touch stories from certain countries?

My 'Hello World' program kept crashing until I realized I was using a single equals sign in an 'if' statement for 3 days straight.

I was staring at my screen in my dorm room for an hour last night, totally stuck, until a friend casually asked if I meant to assign a value instead of compare one (you know, like 'if (x = 5)' instead of 'if (x == 5)').

Wait, isn't the whole point of those apps to give you normal ingredient lists, not stuff you have to hunt down? I tried one last year and ended up buying three different kinds of vinegar for one recipe, which felt like a prank. The glitching shopping list thing happened to me too, and I just started writing everything down on paper again. Paid $400 for a 'career accelerator' webinar that was just a guy reading slides

The Summit is a real live event with actual speakers? Well, color me surprised. I guess I owe Miles a little apology then, I really did think it was just another overhyped digital product. But even so, a thousand dollars for a ticket to sit in a room and listen to people talk still feels like a lot of money. You have to wonder if they are just recycling the same old business advice you can get for free on YouTube. Maybe if they had hands-on workshops or actual mentorship, then the price would make more sense. I still would not bet my paycheck on it, but at least it is not a total scam like that printed Wikipedia guide.

Saw a guy at the county fair forge using a regular shop hammer on his anvil's horn

Read this article somewhere that said the brain actually processes pain from mistakes differently than secondhand lessons. Something about how the emotional sting makes the memory stickier. Not saying we should all go fall on our faces just to learn, but there's something to that concept of really feeling the consequence versus just knowing about it. For me, it was burning a batch of cookies so badly the smoke alarm went off that finally taught me to set a timer, not the ten recipe blogs telling me to. Maybe we need a mix of both kinds of learning.

Found a number in his 2019 tax returns that made me pause

But $446 million in gross revenue still means he was pulling in massive money even after expenses. I get that taxable income is lower, but the scale of his operation was huge from 2017 onward. @henry_palmer24 those tax summaries you mention would need to show detailed deductions to bring it down that much, and I've seen some of those leaked docs too. The thing is, even with equipment and payroll costs, his margins were still high because of his pricing model. I just don't buy that net income was a small fraction of that number given how much he charged per client.
