Warning: someone complained about a Spider-Man comic at my kid's school in Ohio and they pulled 12 books off the shelf that week
So two months ago my son comes home from his school in Dayton and tells me his library took a bunch of books off the shelves because one parent filed a complaint. I asked what books and he said one was a Spider-Man comic, which made no sense to me. I went to the next school board meeting and got the list, and it was 12 titles total, most of them stuff about race or growing up, plus that one comic. The librarian, a lady named Dana who has run that room for 19 years, said she got zero warning, just an email that Friday saying to box them up until review. I found out the county library in the next town over does a public list of challenged books every year, so I printed theirs and brought it with me. My tip if this happens where you live: ask for the reconsideration policy in writing, because half the time they don't even have one and the books go back on the shelf while they figure it out. Took us three meetings but 10 of the 12 came back. Has anyone dealt with a school that pulled stuff without a real review process, and did it ever go back?
