Changed my mind about local news censorship after a town meeting

I used to think censorship only happened in big countries or with government pressure. Then last month, our town paper in Lubbock ran a piece about the mayor's land deal, and suddenly the editor got transferred and the story got pulled. Turns out the mayor's brother owns half the paper's ad revenue, and that was the real pressure. I heard the original reporter talk at a city council meeting, and she laid out the numbers, 40% of their ad income gone in one threat. So now I'm asking, how do we even know what's missing from our local papers when the threats are quiet? Has anyone else caught a story vanishing in their town and dug into why?
