I used to think VPNs were just for pirates until last month

My buddy in Turkey couldn't access Wikipedia for 3 days straight because of a government block. I always figured VPNs were just for folks downloading movies or whatever. But he showed me how the site was totally unavailable without one, then worked fine after he turned it on. That got me looking at other stuff blocked around the world like news sites in China and social media in Iran. I signed up for a basic one for $3 a month just to test it and now I use it anytime I travel. Has anyone else had a moment where you realized blocking was way more common than you thought?

Yeah @elliotr39 same thing happened with me and Instagram in Bangladesh last year, wild how fast things change.

My buddy in Mexico City couldn't get onto Twitter for like a week during some protests last summer, that was wild to see firsthand. I always figured that stuff only happened in like North Korea or whatever, not a country we do so much business with. It's kinda scary how quickly the internet can just vanish depending on where you are.
