Chose the sleeper train over a flight from Beijing to Xi'an, big mistake

I booked the overnight hard sleeper to save money, like 400 yuan versus 800 for the flight, thinking I'd sleep through the 12 hours. The guy across from me snored like a freight train and the carriage smelled like instant noodles and feet, so I got zero rest. Has anyone else made this call and ended up regretting it, or am I just cursed with bad bunkmates?

Learned that lesson the hard way on a overnight bus in Vietnam, paid for the "sleeper" that was basically a coffin with curtains. Woke up with a stranger's elbow in my face and a guy two rows up snoring like a dying lawnmower. The instant noodle smell is universal, it somehow gets into your clothes and haunts you for days. My only advice is bring earplugs and a face mask, but even that wont save you from the foot smell that develops around hour 6. Honestly the hard sleeper is just a gamble, I lost and you lost too apparently.
