Dropped $385 on a calligraphy brush set in Hangzhou and I keep staring at it

I was at a shop near the West Lake market last spring and the owner let me try some brushes, so I walked out with a full set. Six months later I still can't do a basic 横 stroke right, but the cheap brush I got from a night market works way better for my hand. Am I just using the wrong ink or do these fancy brushes take years to break in?
