My VPN kept dying on me in Shanghai last month and I finally figured out why
I was in Shanghai for two weeks in March for a design project and my VPN would just stop working every evening around 8pm. I tried three different apps and they all crashed the same way, which made no sense until a coworker there told me the evening is when traffic gets heaviest and the deep packet inspection kicks in harder. What actually helped was switching to a paid one that changes protocols automatically instead of staying on one, plus turning off wifi and using my phone data when I really needed it. Has anyone else noticed it's way worse at specific times of day, or is that just how it goes there now?
Did you actually test that at different hours though, or just assume the 8pm thing because your coworker said it? I've been in and out of China for years and honestly the blocks seem random to me, some days it's fine all night and other days it dies at 2pm for no reason.
