WeChat pay at a wet market in Chengdu broke my brain

Last month I watched a 70 year old vegetable seller scan a QR code taped to her cart without even looking, and I realized cash is basically dead here. My bank card from back home wouldn't work in the app, so I spent 20 minutes figuring out a workaround just to buy 8 yuan of bok choy. Has anyone else from overseas hit this wall with mobile payments, or am I just way behind on this stuff?
