Unpopular opinion: I spent $800 on a heat pump and it burned me this winter
Everyone in this community talks about heat pumps like they are the answer to everything. I bought a ductless mini split from a local installer last fall for $800 after rebates. Thought I was doing my part for climate action and saving on oil. Fast forward to January when we hit single digits for a week. That thing could not keep my living room above 58 degrees, even running non stop. The installer told me I needed a cold climate model, but that was way more money. So now I am stuck wondering if the hype around heat pumps is really that real for northern states. Has anyone else dealt with a system that just could not handle real winter cold?

$800 after rebates" probably means it's way undersized for single digits

My buddy paid $600 after rebates for a 5kW system last year and it barely kept his fridge running during a cloudy stretch. He spent more on extension cords running to his neighbor's outlet than he saved on his electric bill. Sometimes you get what you pay for, especially when the math doesn't add up on paper.
