Unpopular opinion: I think solar panels on every roof isn't always the best move
Last summer in Austin I helped install panels on my neighbor's 1960s ranch house (you know, with that weird flat tar roof). The whole thing went wrong when we realized the roof couldn't handle the weight without major reinforcement. We spent $3,200 on bracing alone before even mounting a single panel. Meanwhile, his energy audit showed that sealing drafts and upgrading insulation would cut his bill by 40% for under $1,500. I get that solar is great, but sometimes we skip the basics first. Has anyone else run into a situation where the "obvious" green fix backfired?

Man that sucks about the roof bracing. It's crazy how people think solar is like the ultimate solution when half the time just sealing up your house would do more. Kinda feels like we're sold this idea that green tech has to be shiny and new when the boring stuff is way more practical.

Solidarity on that, Kevin. You nailed it with "boring stuff is way more practical." It's wild how everyone chases the flashy tech when just fixing your attic insulation would cut your bills way more than a solar panel ever could.
