Old worn-out calipers vs a $25 digital one, never going back

Ran a job last week in Toledo with my trusty old vernier calipers that were probably older than me. Kept getting measurements that were a hair off, and after three scrapped parts I finally checked them against a $25 digital caliper from Harbor Freight. Turns out the jaws were worn down to almost 0.005" over a 4-inch span. Swapped to the digital one mid-run and zero issues since. Anyone else had a cheap tool embarrass their expensive one like that?

Honestly that whole "trusted old tool" thing gets people every time. It's like how people cling to old phones or worn-out boots just because they've had them forever, but the cheap upgrade does the job way better. Tbh, sometimes the new stuff is just flat out better, no matter how much history you've got with the old thing.

Consider the flip side for a minute. That old tool has been through a lot with you, and you know exactly how it acts, its little quirks, what it can and can't handle. A new one might be cheaper and faster on paper, but it could have its own hidden issues that you only find out after a tough month with it. Sometimes the history you have with something is real data, not just sentiment. It's not always about being stuck in the past, it's about trusting what's proven.
