Used to think speed was king on a Haas but one job with a .001 tolerance changed my mind fast

I was running a part last Thursday where the finish pass kept coming out .002 oversize and I finally realized slowing the spindle down from 12k to 8k RPM with a .015 finish pass got me dead nuts on every part, so why do half the guys in this shop still treat every op like a drag race?

Oh come on, it's not like you're splitting atoms here. A .001 tolerance on a Haas is tight but it's not exactly rocket surgery (is that the right phrase?).

("Rocket surgery" is definitely the right phrase, I've been saying that for years.) But seriously, you're right. .001 on a Haas is totally doable. I once spent an entire Saturday chasing a .0005 tolerance on a part for a local robotics team. Spent more time fiddling with the coolant nozzle and checking the vise than actually cutting metal. By the end of it my hands were cramped and I was talking to the machine like it was a stubborn dog. Worth it though when it came out perfect.
