Heard a guy at the roastery say he weighs his beans twice every morning, should I bother
I was at this little roastery in Portland waiting on a pour over and overheard the owner telling a customer he weighs his dose, then weighs it again right before grinding. He said it's because beans lose a tiny bit of moisture and his shots kept drifting. I've just been scooping with the same spoon for two years and eyeballing it. Do any of you actually re-weigh, or is that guy just being extra?
That second weigh-in is really just catching how much water the beans drank from the air since you opened the bag, which changes with the weather in your kitchen way more than most people realize. A wet winter day versus a dry summer day can shift the same scoop by a gram or two, and that difference shows up in your shot time even if you never touched the grinder. The spoon method works fine until it doesn't, and then you have no idea what changed because you never had a real number to compare against. So he isn't being extra, he's just removing one variable at a time so when something tastes off he knows where to look. The catch is you only need to bother if you actually care about repeatable results, and if you like your coffee the way it is, scoop away.
