Vent: my $500 grinder died after 8 months and the repair shop in Portland quoted me $180 just to look at it
Bought a Baratza Vario last June from a shop on Hawthorne and it worked great until last Tuesday when it just stopped mid grind. Took it in to a repair place downtown and the guy behind the counter said the burr carrier cracked and it would be $180 for the diagnostic plus parts on top. I asked if that was normal for a machine less than a year old and he just shrugged and said "they don't make em like they used to." Now I'm stuck using my old hand grinder every morning which takes like 4 minutes for 20g and my arm is killing me.
So do I pay the $180 and hope it's just the carrier, or is there a better grinder in the $300 range that won't fall apart in under a year?

That repair guy's shrug alone should cost $180, what a racket.
