I blew $180 on a "free speech debate training" weekend in Madison and learned nothing
Back in 2019 I drove 3 hours to a campus workshop that promised to teach students how to run speaker events without everything turning into a shouting match. It cost $180 for the weekend plus gas and a motel, and the main activity was reenacting a 2017 protest with the same 12 people every session. The one useful thing I heard was an organizer saying "we stopped inviting national names and started booking local professors, and our fights went down by half." Now every time a speaker gets disinvited somewhere I think about that, because the small stuff works and nobody sells tickets for it. Did any of you ever pay for one of these leadership weekends, and did it actually help your club at all?
