I used to think shouting down a speaker was a good protest. A talk at my old school changed that.

I was at a talk at UC Berkeley about a year ago where a guy with some pretty wild views was invited. The crowd was yelling so loud you couldn't hear a word. Then this older professor stood up and said, 'If his ideas are so bad, let's hear them and show why they're wrong.' That stuck with me. It made me see that shutting someone up just makes them a victim. How do you handle a speaker you really disagree with without just making noise?

Sometimes you have to shout down hate before it spreads.

That professor nailed it. I see the same thing online, people just dunking on takes they haven't even read. Makes the other side dig in harder.
