On the speaker ban, have them switch sides for a bit.

How often does this ruin family meals at your place too? I feel your pain, just trying to eat some pasta without the world's most heated debate. Adam626 had a decent idea with the side-switching thing, might shock them into quiet. Honestly, sometimes you just gotta tell them the table is a no-fly zone for campus politics.
