Rant: my student group had to pick between a 2 hour debate slot or no event at all
Our college only gave us one room and one time slot for the whole semester, so we either booked a speaker for a 2 hour debate or cancelled the event. We took the debate slot and it went fine, but 400 students got turned away at the door in Columbus. Has anyone else dealt with a school capping event time instead of just saying no?
My buddy ran into the exact same thing at his school last year. They got handed a single 90 minute slot on a Friday afternoon and that was it, take it or leave it. He said the room fit maybe 150 people and they had close to 500 trying to get in, so they ended up streaming it in a hallway for the overflow. The worst part was the school acted like they were doing the club a favor by giving them anything at all. Two hours is barely enough time to get through a real debate anyway, so capping it like that just makes the whole thing worse.
