Spent $300 on a campus security deposit for a speaker last year, and the whole thing got canceled anyway.

Tell me about it. I once paid a huge non-refundable venue fee for a community 5k that got shut down the week before because of a permit issue. They kept every penny, and we never even got to use the space. It feels like throwing money into a hole. These policies just punish people for trying to organize anything.

I get what you mean, river_scott, but those fees aren't really a punishment. They cover real costs for the school or venue, like staff time and insurance, that they have to pay whether the event happens or not. It's more about them not losing money on a last-minute cancellation than trying to stop people from organizing.
