The 1999 Berkeley anti-war talk was tame compared to last semester
That shift really kicked in around 2016 for me, the whole vibe went from 'let's debate this' to 'let's shut this down', and I miss when a controversial talk meant a packed room of engaged people, not a security risk.

Think about how many hateful speakers used that open platform to push actual violence and lies, not just spicy opinions. A packed room of engagement sounds nice until you realize it gave those people a stage to recruit and spread harm. Shutting down that nonsense isn't weak, it's just protecting people who don't deserve to be targets for someone's 'free speech' experiment.
