My local shop had a guy named Jerry who would literally slap your hand if you touched the cover wrong. I learned the hard way after he yelled at me for "spider gripping" a New Mutants #98. What finally worked was watching how the old timers handled books at conventions, they always support the spine with one hand and the bottom with the other. Now I just tell my buddies the bag and board is cheap insurance if they complain about my holding style. Plus it keeps the corners from getting dinged up which matters more than showing off. Honestly better to look like a dork with perfect books than a cool guy with beat up comics.

Pinky out like a fancy tea party" - that's good stuff. @evan_stone nailed it about the old timers, I've noticed the same pattern with people who actually take care of their stuff, whether it's comics, tools, or guitars. It's like there's a whole secret language of how to treat things right that nobody bothers to teach anymore.

Back in '92 I proudly showed my Amazing Spider-Man #300 to a guy at the shop and he just snorted and said I was holding it like a greasy slice of pizza. I still flip through books with my pinkies out like I'm at a fancy tea party now, it's a deeply embarrassing habit. At least I'm not the guy who stacks his long boxes sideways and complains about spine rolls.
